Drexel Movie Theater
Drexel Theater • Bexley, Ohio • M+A Architects
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1930’s Art Deco cinema located in the eastern suburb of Columbus underwent renovations in 2016 to restore and revitalize the theater’s iconic marquee, entrance and lobby. In the entry lobby, restoration of the original terrazzo flooring and retainment of the original ceiling design were accomplished. Continuing on into the main lobby, the restoration of the original plaster crown molding and the second-floor stairway took place; the drop ceiling was removed and restored to its original height; and a new, full-services concessions counter complementary to the Art Deco design was installed. Along with these main area renovations, there were also newly constructed men’s and women’s restrooms, replacement of the barrel roof over the three theaters and the HVAC; and the conversion of all three theaters to state-of-the-art digital projection and sound theaters.
